Sunday of mobilization in the Basque Country for migrants who died at the border

Mobilization day this Sunday, February 6, 2022 of the Etorkinekin migrant aid association. Goal: “pay homage to those who have died or disappeared at land or sea borders”. Throughout the day, several meeting points are organized in Bayonne, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Saint Palais and Hasparren. At the end of the morning there were about thirty of them on the square of the Church of Hasparren where Txomin speaks “of an inhuman migration policy”. Small candles were lit on the city’s War Memorial.

Etorkinekin points out that when crossing the border between Irún and Hendaye, “seven migrants died in 2021, either by drowning while trying to cross the Bidassoa, or crushed by a train on the railway line taken to escape police checks”.
