In the Netherlands, it’s a story of a yacht that doesn’t pass under a historic bridge that makes a lot of noise. It involves billionaire Jeff Bezos, its owner. A most symbolic affair which puts the town hall of Rotterdam in the embarrassment.
A 127-meter-long, ultra-luxurious super sailing yacht worth 430 million euros is causing controversy in the Netherlands. Its owner, the whimsical founder of Amazon, is none other than Jeff Bezos. Except that his latest acquisition will soon include huge masts and he will therefore no longer be able to pass under a historic bridge in Rotterdam. For the sailboat to reach the sea, the billionaire wants to dismantle it. This is unimaginable for some residents, who are mobilizing on social networks.
The ship could pass provided that the central part of the bridge is temporarily removed. However, the town hall had promised never to dismantle the building again after its renovation in 2017. According to the municipality, no official request has yet been filed by the billionaire, but the latter could pay a lot of money to pass his yacht. Financial compensation that could tip the scales.
