Jean Joseph Carrieres

Jean Joseph Marie Carrieres (Lyon 1855- Paris 1894) is one of the most fascinating artists of the late 19th century. A self-taught sculptor and ceramist, he took his favorite materials to the limit: wax, plaster, earth, bronze and sandstone.

This passion for sandstone led him to Saint Amand en Puisaye where he opened a workshop.

His fauns, monsters, frogs and masks give substance to a world that is both realistic and dreamlike. Died prematurely, carried away by illness and no doubt also by creative fever, this sculptor and potter of genius, who challenged artistic rules, left an important work, largely preserved by the Musée du Petit Palais, in Paris.
