1. 2010-2013
This is the year that Mike Ward began touring his show, which will be presented 230 times in three years. During his show, the comedian devotes several jokes to the disease of Jérémy Gabriel. This causes the young artist to have a deformation of the skull and face.
2. 2015
A complaint is filed against Mike Ward before the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse.
3. 2016
A year after the filing of the complaint, a court condemns the comedian to pay $35,000 to Jérémy Gabriel and $7,000 to his mother as moral and punitive damages.
4. November 28, 2019
Unsurprisingly, Mike Ward is appealing the case. The judgment will however be upheld by the Quebec Court of Appeal.
5. July 30, 2020
The Supreme Court of Canada – the highest court in the country – agrees to hear the case of Mike Ward, who still refuses to pay Jérémy Gabriel $35,000.
6. February 2021
The parties plead in turn their case before the Supreme Court – the highest court in the country – after the comedian brought the case again on appeal.
7. October 23, 2021
The Supreme Court rules in favor of Mike Ward in a split vote (5-4). The comedian will not have to pay $ 35,000 to Jérémy Gabriel who was suing him for discrimination.
8. February 1, 2022
The young artist turns again to the courts. This time, he and his mother are suing for defamation rather than discrimination. The plaintiffs claim $372,600.
