Beijing Olympics: three Canadians on the sidelines due to COVID-19

Three members of the Canadian delegation to Beijing were sidelined Tuesday due to COVID-19 protocol, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) announced.

In total, the Canadian team has 414 members — including athletes, coaches and staff.

The Canadian trio who tested positive were unable “to fulfill their role at the Olympics,” the COC said in a statement.

“We do it on a case-by-case basis. We want to respect the privacy of those affected and we will not reveal names at this time,” he added.

“It was part of our strategy to arrive early to allow time for testing. And if necessary, let the medical expert panel process run its course. »

The COC confirmed on Tuesday that figure skater Keegan Messing has not yet arrived in Beijing. He must meet the criteria related to the COVID-19 protocol before flying to China.

Messing is scheduled to skate the men’s solo next week, but is also entered in the pairs event which begins Friday.

The COC announced last Friday that five members of the delegation were struggling with the protocol.

The organization will not release the names of Canadians held out unless an athlete who cannot compete for this reason wishes to share the information.

Athletes who test positive in China must produce two negative tests 24 hours apart to be released from quarantine.
