Quebec will pay millions of dollars for the acquisition of 725 electric BIXIs, as well as the creation of 83 additional stations for the Montreal network of self-service bicycles.

The provincial government made the announcement Monday afternoon.
“725 BIXI bikes and 83 additional stations in Montreal! I salute these investments by the Government of Quebec, this is excellent news for the development of soft and active mobility in our metropolis,” said Mayor Valérie Plante on social networks.
Montreal thus won half of an envelope of 6.5 million aimed at “diversifying the offer by providing users with electrically assisted bicycles, in particular in places where the topography limits access to active transport”.
The program indicates that BIXI Montreal will also obtain funding to electrify eight stations in Laval and three stations in Terrebonne. An additional station will be installed in Mont-Royal.
Sherbrooke, Quebec and the MRC de la Vallée-du-Richelieu also obtain significant amounts to set up self-service bicycle terminals.
“I am pleased to see the enthusiasm with which municipalities and organizations have taken action to offer these new services to their population,” said Transport Minister François Bonnardel in a press release.
