Cryptocurrency trading platform Coinbase Global announced on Monday that Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke will join its board of directors.
Posted yesterday at 6:37 p.m.
Coinbase founder Brian Armstrong said in a statement that Mr. Lütke brings his experience as an entrepreneur and as an early adopter of cryptocurrency, including integrating Shopify with the cryptocurrency payment platform. Coinbase.
According to him, Lütke will be able to help Coinbase expand the use of cryptocurrency to more people and businesses around the world.
Mr. Lütke for his part argued in a statement that Coinbase and Shopify share the same vision of decentralized finance and entrepreneurship.
In 2020, Shopify also joined the Facebook-backed Diem Association (then called Libra), which was working on a global digital currency, although media reported last week that the association was selling off its assets.
Coinbase clarified that Lütke’s appointment was still subject to formal board approval.
