The organic farming sector is wondering about the rise in prices and is experiencing a first growth crisis. There are too many organic farmers for a shrinking market.

Organic farming promises healthier, chemical-free foods. But after years of growth, consumers, who are seeing their purchasing power diminish, are increasingly likely to turn their backs on it. For the first time, in 2021, sales of organic products fell by more than 3% over one year.

On a Parisian market, Sunday January 30, only one stand offers organic and customers are not in a hurry. Last year, the drop in organic sales affected certain products in particular: -7% for milk, -11% for fruit and vegetables, -12% for butter and -18% for flour. Six years ago, a market gardener in Loiret made the choice of organic by growing pumpkins, butternut squash and red onions which he sells in short circuits. A few weeks ago, its turnover fell by 40%.
