scaring shots authorized in Gentioux after the attack on a farm

Did the wolf rage in Gentioux-Pigerolles (Creuse)? A herd of sheep was attacked twice in the town, on 26 and 28 January. No certainty for the moment on the presence of the predator in the area, but “the responsibility of the wolf has not been dismissed by the French Office for Biodiversity”, according to the prefecture of Creuse. Friday, January 28, the authorities therefore authorized scaring shots on the wolf on the territory of the municipality, in the vicinity of the threatened herds, as well as on the neighboring municipalities. A measure already taken in Féniers on January 19.

Tensions among breeders

The wolf is a protected species. These shots, intended to frighten and drive away the animal, are therefore carried out with non-lethal ammunition, by wolf hunting agents from Creuse. At the same time, the prefecture launched the emergency measures provided for in the “National Plan of Action on the Wolf”. It provides in particular the rapid compensation of farmers affected by the attacks when the wolf is suspected, as well as the provision of means of scaring and protection.

The wolf is present by periods in Limousin since 2017, but had never attacked in Creuse before the end of last year. The predator is suspected of having slaughtered several sheep in the town of Féniers.
