More than two years after the spectacular theft of several thousand diamonds from a museum, the trial of the thieves opened in Germany on Friday 28 January. The loot was never found.
The trial takes place under high security in Germany from Friday 28 January. Six suspects, aged 23 to 28, are members of organized crime. The loot of the theft, estimated at more than 100 million euros worth of precious stones, including a 49-carat diamond, has never been found. Treasures of German heritage that were stolen at the end of 2019 in just eight minutes from a museum.
The investigation revealed meticulous preparation, in particular a burnt electrical transformer to deactivate the alarm and public lighting. The suspects were arrested in Berlin, a year after the facts. They belong to a criminal gang of Albanian origin, “a family structure that has already stood out for extreme crimes”, says Martin Steltner, Attorney General of Berlin. The suspects face up to 10 years in prison.
