One month before the official opening of the presidential campaign, the collection of sponsorships began on Thursday 27 January. Elected officials have until March 4 to choose a candidate. To sponsor or not? Which ? For some mayors, these questions are a real headache.
Each elected official has his own method of choosing a candidate to sponsor. For Jean-Marie Allain, unlabeled mayor of Marpent (North), this will be the draw. “I could have sponsored someone without qualms except that I have respect for my colleges. I didn’t want to involve them in a sponsorship that would not necessarily have been theirs”, he defends himself. This choice, rather well seen by its citizens, will nevertheless be canceled by the Constitutional Council which does not validate this type of practice when it is aware of it.
If others clearly display their choice of sponsorship, some have decided not to sponsor anyone, despite the solicitations. Among the 42,000 elected officials, including 36,000 mayors, fewer and fewer sponsor a candidate. A steady decline has been observed since 2002, until 2017. Candidates have until March 4 to send the 500 sponsorships required to the Constitutional Council.
