In France, from March 1, school canteens, company restaurants and brasseries will have to indicate the origin of the meat. French breeders demanded this transparency, because a lot of poultry is imported.

One more month before knowing exactly where the chicken on our plates comes from. As of March 1, 2022, the origin of poultry will have to be displayed and consumers may be surprised. Indeed, 46% of the chicken consumed in France comes from elsewhere and in restaurants, it would even be 80%.

Why does France import so many chickens? Meat is simply cheaper. A standard fillet costs 2.20 euros from Ukraine against 4.90 euros for a French fillet. A Parisian brasserie claims to be able to meet the challenge of being 100% French thanks to the number of covers served. But that’s not the case for everyone. So they buy chicken from Ukraine, Brazil or Thailand, countries with intensive farming. “French chicken is a chicken that will still guarantee you health and nutritional quality (…) and this is not always the case for imported products”warns Jean-Michel Schaeffer, president of the National Interprofessional Association of Meat Poultry.
