For forty years now, this mythical bar located in the heart of the French capital has lived to the rhythm of jazz music.
Right in the heart of Paris, this is the rue du jazz. Aficionados of this music from across the Atlantic can meet in the three clubs on rue des Lombards. The most legendary of them, the Sunset-Sunside, is celebrating its fortieth anniversary. At the origin of the club, a father and his son: “In 1982, we opened the Sunset jazz club, and a little later we opened the Sunside. That is to say, we removed the restaurant and opened a second jazz club above“, explains Jean-Marc Portet.
And it was in a vaulted cellar that looked like the Parisian metro that the story began. “The Sunset stage is very small. The public is really on the ground floor, that’s what makes the DNA of this place. It’s that closeness. Musicians often say they hear the audience breathing”, adds his son Stéphane. Thanks to this freedom granted by the club, the musicians were able to develop their projects at any time of day or night. Today the place hosts more than 700 concerts a year, and hopes to continue to write the great history of jazz every evening.
