A veteran of Spanish cinema, Fernando Trueba is a filmmaker whose films have often distinguished themselves internationally. Let us think in particular of Belle Epoque, winner of the Oscar for best foreign language film in 1994.

His new feature film is an adaptation ofEl olvido que seremos, a successful fictionalized biography (more than 300,000 copies sold in Colombia), written by Héctor Abad Faciolince, son of Héctor Abad Gómez, the hero in this story. Perhaps this proximity explains the almost hagiographic approach taken by the filmmaker to tell the life of this doctor from Medellín who, during the 1970s and 1980s, fought for greater social justice, while assuming his role as a loving father to his six children.

The comparison with Roma, an exceptional work by Alfonso Cuarón, is inevitable. It is not to the advantage of this feature film where we sometimes deplore an absence of context. The fight led by this humanist in a city plagued by political corruption and the violence of drug traffickers is obviously worthy of interest, but Fernando Trueba prefers to focus on family life by focusing on the gaze of the son who, later, will make one. novel. The approach is laudable, but this story would certainly have deserved a broader perspective.

Fortunately, the excellent performance of Javier Cámara, one of whose most striking roles remains that of the nurse in Speak with her (Pedro Almodóvar), compensates for the shortcomings of the script.

Retained in the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival in 2020, We will be the forgotten ones was operated in France under the title The oblivion that we will be, under which the book is also known in French-speaking countries. It has been modified for its operation in Quebec.
