On October 29, 2020, Nice (Alpes-Maritimes) was once again the target of a terrorist attack. In the heart of the Notre-Dame de l’Assomption basilica, a man killed three parishioners with a knife.
One year that he no longer returns alone in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption. On October 29, 2020, Joffrey Devillers lost his wife, Nadine, the first victim of the terrorist attack that struck Nice. “We realize immediately. I know that it happened next to the holy water font and as soon as we enter the basilica, we are next to the holy water font.”, he testifies. It is barely 9 o’clock that day, when Brahim Aouissaoui, a 21-year-old Tunisian, enters the basilica and kills three people. Warned by a friend, it was only around 1 p.m. that Joffrey Devillers learned the news.
The suspected terrorist, injured in the assault given by the municipal police, is now imprisoned in the Paris region. While waiting for the trial, it is difficult for Joffrey Devillers to express his feelings. “We feel pity for them because hatred brings nothing. Nadine was a humanist and it rubbed off on me. We cannot live with hatred, we can only live on love”, says Joffrey Devillers.
