In Germany, the average salary of a beginning teacher is 6,300 euros gross per month. But that requires some quid pro quos. To realize this, just follow Julia’s day. Every morning, she arrives half an hour early to refine her many lessons for the day. Like all teachers across the Rhine, she teaches two disciplines: it begins with a course in German literature, then continues an hour later with a French course.

Teachers must prepare courses from the fifth to the final year. “I have masters in both subjects to be able to teach them. I give a total of 26 lessons a week. It’s dense, we couldn’t do more than we do, it’s already limited”, analyzes the teacher.
