In Peru, the causes of the oil spill, which has polluted thousands of square kilometers on the sides of the country since January 15, are still unclear. An investigation has been opened.
Peruvian beaches are disfigured by a thick layer of oil. The black wave continues to surge as volunteers pick up the oil, despite the toxic gases. The work promises to be gigantic in a nature reserve near the capital, Lima. “I’m really worried about what impact this tide will have”, explains a resident. Seabirds are the first victims. The oil spill affects the entire local ecosystem: it is now impossible to catch fish and all activity in the port is slowing down.
How could these 6,000 barrels have fallen from a moored tanker during an unloading on Saturday 15 January. It is the strong swell caused by the volcanic eruption on the Tonga Islands, thousands of kilometers away which caused the moorings to break. Faced with the anger of the population, the Peruvian State and the Spanish oil company Repsol, blame each other for the disaster. The company has pledged to take care of the 18,000 square kilometers of polluted coastline.
