After the murder of a photojournalist in Tijuana, the profession gathered in this city in northwestern Mexico to demand justice.
The year 2022 is off to a bad start for Mexican press freedom. On Monday, January 17, 2022, photojournalist Margarito Martinez was murdered in Tijuana, a city in northeastern Mexico. After receiving threats last month, he had been receiving protective measures for a few days. Since the beginning of January, he is already the second journalist victim of a homicide in the country. And according to an AFP count, there have been around a hundred since 2000.
The news angered his colleagues: “I call on the authorities to investigate this case as soon as possible. Because we remember, the work of journalists is one of the most dangerous jobs in Mexico. And if they want them to work in peace, they should improve the way they handle this problem“, indignant Sonia de Anda, member of the NGO Yo Si Soy Periodista (I, I am a journalist). In this country plagued by drugs, violence and corruption, Mexico had a homicide rate of 29 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2020 compared to 5.8 per 100,000 inhabitants in the United States.
