The use of certain electronic products has a role in pollution. On the 12/13 set of France 3, Jean-Christophe Batteria takes stock of these smartphones, computers and televisions, which have an increasingly significant environmental impact.

There is now a new phenomenon called digital pollution. In France, it represents 2.5% of CO2 emissions, due to the use of telephones, computers and televisions. “In 2035, experts estimate that this figure will have doubled”, says our journalist Jean-Christophe Batteria on the set of 12/13. Among these 2.5% of digital pollution, the use of telephones has a responsibility of 22%. Infrastructures and networks are responsible for 14% of digital pollution.

80% of the CO2 emitted by a mobile phone is due to its manufacture, and 20% to its use. “Today, 92% of French people have a smartphone and each household has fifteen digital devices, the impact is colossal”, says Jean-Christophe Battery. To limit this CO2 emission, the purchase of a conditioned appliance is strongly recommended. Several precautions for use are also to be taken: turn off your device instead of putting it on standby, or limit unnecessary use. “Twenty emails is the equivalent of one kilometer of car. One year of mailbox is 1,000 km of car”, ends our journalist live on France 3.
