Claude Guéant must still wait behind bars. A sentence enforcement judge examined, on Wednesday January 19, the request for release from Nicolas Sarkozy’s former interior minister, and he will render his decision on February 7, France Télévisions learned from its attorney, Philippe Bouchez El Ghozi.
Claude Guéant, 77, has been in detention since December 13. Justice decided to imprison him after finding that he was not making the necessary payments to pay the fine of 75,000 euros and the damages he had been awarded in 2019 in the case of bonuses in cash from the Ministry of the Interior. He had also been sentenced to two years in prison, including one year, but had benefited from an adjustment of sentence and was serving it on parole.
Philippe Bouchez El Ghozi explained, the day of incarceration, which his client still had to “pay a sum of 115,000 euros” and he was paying “for two years 3,000 euros per month which have been seized from his pensions in the amount of 5,500 euros” and claimed that he only had 1,600 euros left per month and could not pay more.
