The organization made the announcement on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the announcement of a major investment of 25 million dollars.
The details concerning this new team from the Quebec metropolis will be revealed “at a later date”, said the press release from the PHF. The expansion team in Montreal will be the seventh team on the circuit, which has franchises in Boston, Buffalo, Connecticut, Minnesota, Newark and Toronto.
The league also says it wants to introduce a new team in the United States, eventually.
The sum of 25 million will be spread over three years. It will include 7.5 million that will be paid in salaries and benefits for the 2022-2023 season.
“This is an extraordinary investment by the ownership group, which reaffirms the strength of their commitment to becoming a force for change in women’s hockey,” commissioner Ty Tumminia told The Associated Press.
