A smuggler, from the urban area of Hendaye (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), was taken into custody on Friday January 14 in the premises of the Hendaye border police after hitting two police vehicles in Bayonne, reports France Blue Basque Country. He was then placed in pre-trial detention and was to be tried on Monday in an immediate appearance, still according to information from France Bleu Pays Basque.
The man was caught red-handed in the city center, when he dropped off a dozen migrants on the Quai de Lesseps, right next to a center where migrants are accommodated. The smuggler was followed by police officers from the mobile research brigade (BMR), who had set up an operation a few weeks ago to arrest him in flagrante delicto.
Realizing that he was being followed, the man tried to flee to avoid his arrest, and ran for the first time on the police, hitting a police car in which were three officers. He then continued on his way and hit a second vehicle. The driver was finally arrested by the gendarmes in Hendaye, on the Spanish border, about forty kilometers from Bayonne, around 10:30 p.m. No officer was injured.
