Gaza Update: Hamas Engages with US on American Hostage Release – March 9, 2025, 5:45 PM | Zonebourse

Recent discussions took place between Hamas leaders and U.S. envoy Adam Boehler, aiming to secure the release of an Israeli-American hostage held in Gaza. Talks in Qatar involved potential agreements to address ongoing conflict and ceasefire negotiations. Meanwhile, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen announced a halt to electricity sales to Gaza to pressure Hamas, amidst reports of continued violence and humanitarian crises following the conflict’s escalation on October 7, 2023.

Recent Talks Between Hamas and U.S. Envoy

In a significant development, discussions have been held between leaders of Hamas and Adam Boehler, the U.S. envoy focused on hostages. The primary objective of these meetings is to facilitate the release of an Israeli-American individual currently in the custody of Hamas in Gaza. A senior official from Hamas disclosed this information on Sunday.

Taher al Nono, who serves as a political advisor to the Hamas leadership, confirmed this historic dialogue with U.S. representatives, indicating that the talks took place in the capital of Qatar over the previous week. “Several meetings have already taken place in Doha, focusing on the release of one of the dual-nationality prisoners. We have acted positively and flexibly, respecting the interests of the Palestinian people,” he remarked.

Al Nono further noted that the discussions also revolved around the implementation of a phased agreement aimed at concluding the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. “We informed the American delegation that we do not oppose the release of the prisoner as part of these talks,” he added.

Ceasefire Negotiations and Regional Tensions

Last week, Steve Witkoff, the special envoy appointed by President Donald Trump, communicated to White House reporters that securing the release of Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old from New Jersey and the last known American hostage held by Hamas, is an “absolute priority” for the U.S. Alexander previously served in the Israeli army.

Both Israel and Hamas indicated readiness to proceed with the next stage of ceasefire negotiations. Mediators are actively engaged in talks to extend the fragile truce that has been in place since January. A Hamas delegation recently met with Egyptian mediators to reaffirm their commitment to negotiating the second phase of the agreement.

In a related decision, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen announced that the Israeli Electric Corporation would cease electricity sales to Gaza, a move he described in a video as a strategy to pressure Hamas into releasing hostages. This follows earlier reductions in power supply to Gaza initiated at the onset of the war in October 2023, which may significantly impact essential services like seawater desalination.

The recent engagement between Adam Boehler and Hamas represents a departure from a long-standing U.S. policy of refraining from negotiations with groups classified as terrorists. The conflict ignited by a Hamas raid into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, has led to severe humanitarian consequences, with reports indicating over 48,000 Palestinian fatalities, according to local health officials.

Al Nono expressed appreciation for the pivotal role played by Steve Witkoff in brokering the January 19 ceasefire agreement, which halted hostilities in Gaza. “We hope that he (Witkoff) will strive to successfully negotiate the second phase,” he stated.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, Hamas released 33 Israeli hostages and five Thais in exchange for approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. Israeli authorities estimate that fewer than half of the remaining 59 hostages are still alive. However, the ceasefire remains fragile, as indicated by reports of ongoing violence, including a recent incident where a Palestinian was killed and two others injured by Israeli gunfire in Shejaia, eastern Gaza City.

The Israeli military confirmed conducting airstrikes against individuals perceived as threats near their troops and reported intercepting a drone that crossed into Israeli airspace, alongside apprehending several suspects attempting to retrieve it.
