The Exciting 75th Berlinale in Berlin
From February 13 to 23, the vibrant city of Berlin will host the 75th edition of the Berlinale. This prestigious film festival is set to attract a host of prominent national and international stars, whether they are vying for the coveted Golden Bear or participating out of competition. Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Berlinale.
Fresh Leadership and International Jury
This year marks a new chapter for the Berlinale as it is under fresh management. Tricia Tuttle, an experienced festival director, steps in for the first time, taking over from the previous leadership duo, Carlo Chatrian and Mariëtte Rissenbeek. Tuttle has a rich history in organizing major film festivals, including her role as the head of the London Film Festival from 2018 to 2022.
As is tradition, a completely new international jury will convene to assess the films and determine the awards. In a notable highlight, esteemed director, screenwriter, and producer Todd Haynes will preside over the jury. Haynes, known for acclaimed films like ‘Carol’ and ‘I’m Not There’, will be joined by a talented group including Nabil Ayouch, Maria Schrader, Bina Daigeler, Fan Bingbing, Rodrigo Moreno, and Amy Nicholson.
Highlights of the Opening Program
The Berlinale will kick off with the world premiere of Tom Tykwer’s new film ‘Das Licht’, featuring performances by Lars Eidinger and Milena Nicolette Krebitz. This drama will be showcased out of competition, setting the stage for a spectacular festival.
While the competition for the Golden and Silver Bears continues, one award is already confirmed: the Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement will be presented to the acclaimed Scottish actress and Oscar winner Tilda Swinton during the opening gala at the Berlinale Palast.
Films and Stars Competing for Glory
This year, 19 films are in contention for the coveted Golden Bear. Among the notable entries is Richard Linklater’s ‘Blue Moon’, which promises to add international flair with stars like Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qualley. Another significant contender is ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You’, featuring Rose Byrne and Conan O’Brien.
From Mexico, Michel Franco’s ‘Dreams’, starring Jessica Chastain, is also in the running, along with Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s UK film ‘Hot Milk’, which boasts performances from Emma Mackey and Fiona Shaw. German representation comes from Frédéric Hambalek’s ‘Was Marielle weiß’ and several co-productions.

Additionally, the festival will showcase Bong Joon-ho’s new film ‘Mickey 17’, featuring Robert Pattinson and Toni Collette. Fans might also spot Benedict Cumberbatch thanks to ‘The Thing with Feathers’, increasing the excitement surrounding this year’s Berlinale.
