Bob Hanning Takes the Helm of Italy’s Handball Team
In an exciting development for Italian handball, Bob Hanning has been appointed as the new national coach. The managing director of Füchse Berlin steps into this role, succeeding Riccardo Trillini. This appointment comes on the heels of Italy’s impressive performance at the World Cup, where they made history by reaching the main round for the first time and finishing in 16th place.
Aiming for Success with a Strong Vision
Bob Hanning is already hard at work enhancing his Italian language skills. “Not yet,” he admitted when asked about his proficiency, “my Italian needs improvement.” Nevertheless, the enthusiastic official remains optimistic about his progress, saying, “I want to be able to sing along with the anthem.” In an interview with SID, he expressed his excitement about this new chapter.
As the new leader in a developing handball nation, Hanning’s appointment has generated buzz within the Italian federation just before the World Cup finals in Oslo. “The World Championship has revealed the team’s potential. I look forward to the upcoming weeks, months, and years. Together, we can achieve great things,” he shared in Oslo.
Italy’s recent journey in the World Cup has been remarkable. During only their second participation, the Squadra Azzurra, featuring German players Domenico Ebner and Leo Prantner, secured their first spot in the main round with victories over Algeria and Tunisia. Their win against the Czech Republic ensured their best-ever finish at a World Cup.
The federation’s decision to transition from Riccardo Trillini to Hanning seems strategic, aimed at leveraging the extensive network and experience of the former DHB vice president, particularly in nurturing young talent. The recent transfer of the young player Prantner (23) from Balingen to Füchse Berlin only reinforces this notion.
Hanning had mentioned his interest in developing talent in smaller handball nations about a year and a half ago, signaling his commitment to coaching. Known for his expertise in player development, he will also function as an advisor to the Italian federation on youth and development matters.
“It has always been a pleasure for me to help develop something great,” Hanning stated. He recognizes the challenge of continuing Riccardo Trillini’s successful work, but he is prepared to meet it with unwavering dedication. He will maintain his commitment in the capital as well.
Previously, Hanning led VfL Potsdam from the 3rd league to the Bundesliga, stepping down from his role with the cooperation club after the promotion was achieved last summer. His coaching experience includes time at SG Solingen and HSV Hamburg, and he concluded his presidency in the DHB in 2021.
Now, Hanning is focused on the Italian squad, which holds great promise for the future, as nearly two-thirds of the players in the World Cup lineup were 26 or younger. This solid foundation positions Hanning for success as they aim for further accomplishments at next year’s European Championship. He envisions a future filled with “Notti magiche” on the handball stage, ready to cheer on his team with enthusiasm. “Together we can achieve a lot,” he asserts, adding a spirited, “Forza Italia!”
