SC Paderborn Faces Setback in Promotion Race

SC Paderborn’s quest for promotion in the 2nd Bundesliga took a hit as they suffered a disappointing 1:2 defeat against Hertha BSC at home on Sunday (May 19, 2025). This loss marked the team’s third consecutive game without a win, leaving them in the mid-table of the league.

Hertha’s victory was largely attributed to their clinical finishing, allowing them to narrow the gap to Paderborn to just three points.

Defensive Masterclass from Hertha BSC

After the match, Hertha’s head coach, Christian Fiel, highlighted the significance of his team’s disciplined defensive display. He stated, “We put everything on the line, which is essential for achieving success.” This defensive effort was crucial in securing the win.

Paderborn’s center-back Tjark Scheller acknowledged Hertha’s strong defense in a post-match interview: “In the second half, we had numerous chances near the penalty area, but Hertha’s defense was commendable in blocking our attempts.”

The match began with Paderborn showing great intensity and aggression, but their early goal was ruled out for offside. Hertha gradually found their rhythm, with forward Derry Scherhant scoring a stunning goal in the 16th minute, putting the visitors ahead 1:0.

Following the goal, Paderborn appeared rattled, and the game saw a lack of scoring opportunities as Hertha focused on maintaining their solid defensive structure.

In the second half, Paderborn came out with renewed vigor, but their momentum was short-lived. Despite a promising chance for Aaron Zehnter, Hertha’s goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck made a crucial save to deny the equalizer.

Hertha managed to control the pace of the game, frustrating Paderborn as they struggled to create clear-cut chances. A penalty awarded to Hertha for a foul by Paderborn’s Laurin Curda allowed Mickael Cuisance to convert and extend the lead to 2:0 in the 69th minute.

Paderborn did not give up, ramping up the tempo and finally finding the back of the net in stoppage time when Sven Michel scored a consolation goal. However, it was not enough to change the outcome of the match.

In the frantic final moments, Michel fell in the box after a challenge, pleading for a penalty, but the referee’s decision went against him. Coach Lukas Kwasniok expressed his frustration with both his team’s performance and the officiating, stating, “If that last action isn’t a foul, then we must question the officiating.”

Looking ahead, Paderborn will face Darmstadt away on January 26, 2025, while Hertha prepares to host Hamburg the night before.
