Upcoming Changes to Windows, WhatsApp, and Waipu.tv in 2025

Significant changes are set for 2025, including the end of Windows 10 support and WhatsApp for older devices. Germany will implement electronic patient records to enhance healthcare efficiency, while new EU regulations will streamline e-bike battery disposal. Starting January 1, businesses must issue electronic invoices, and Waipu.tv subscription prices will increase. Additionally, from May 1, 2025, applicants for identification documents must submit digital photos instead of printed ones to prevent fraud.

Significant Changes Coming in 2025

The dawn of the new year 2025 is approaching quickly. As with each new year, numerous regulations, laws, and other elements will evolve, impacting our everyday lives. To keep you informed and prepared for what lies ahead, we have gathered the key changes that will take effect in 2025.

Key Software Support Endings

Attention PC users: If you are still running Windows 10 on your home or office devices, significant changes are on the horizon. Microsoft will discontinue update support for Windows 10 starting October 15, 2024. Post this date, the operating system will cease to receive both feature enhancements and security updates. This means that any known critical security vulnerabilities will remain unaddressed, and technical support will also be withdrawn. Users with an activated version of Windows 10 can upgrade to Windows 11 for free through Windows Update, provided they meet the necessary hardware specifications.

In addition, the widely-used messaging platform WhatsApp will stop functioning on devices with KaiOS, primarily feature phones from brands like Nokia and Gigaset, effective February 1, 2025. Furthermore, from May 5, 2025, users of iPhones that do not have at least iOS 15.1 installed will lose access to WhatsApp. This includes models like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, who will no longer be able to use the service.

Innovations in Healthcare and Environmental Regulations

2025 will also mark a significant advancement in the digitalization of healthcare with the introduction of the electronic patient record (ePA). Beginning in March 2025, this system will be rolled out for all 73 million legally insured individuals in Germany. Those who prefer not to participate can opt out through their health insurance provider. The ePA allows patients to centrally store their medical records, providing easy access via an app, while maintaining control over which healthcare providers can view their data. This innovation aims to streamline communication among medical professionals and enhance the efficiency of patient care.

On the environmental front, the summer of 2025 will see the implementation of a new EU battery regulation aimed at simplifying the disposal of old e-bike and e-scooter batteries. Recycling centers and waste disposal sites will be mandated to accept these batteries, preventing illegal disposal and fostering recycling efforts. It is important to note that disposing of batteries via household waste will remain illegal, with fines reaching up to 100,000 euros for violations.

Changes in Business Regulations and Services

Another notable change will impact businesses beginning January 1, 2025, when all sales transactions will require the issuance of electronic invoices (E-invoices) that comply with specific standards. Traditional PDF invoices will no longer suffice; businesses must issue and transmit invoices in a structured electronic format. This regulation, part of the Growth Opportunities Act, focuses on taxable sales, meaning that private consumers are unlikely to encounter E-invoices.

Additionally, Waipu.tv users should prepare for an increase in subscription costs, as the price for the Waipu.tv Perfect Plus package will rise from 12.99 euros to 14.99 euros per month, affecting both new and existing subscribers.

Lastly, starting May 1, 2025, a significant update will occur for those seeking identification documents. Printed passport photos will no longer be accepted; applicants must provide digital photos taken by professional photographers or at the authority itself. These photos will be securely transmitted using a special code, reducing the risk of fraudulent applications.
