Renowned as a snowmobiling haven, the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region, including Chibougamau and Chapais, pulsates with winter adventure. Whether you seek serene trails or rugged challenges, this region has it all.
“With over 3,360 kilometers of trails, we offer an unmatched experience for snowmobilers visiting our area,” shares Antoine Larouche, an administrator at the Federation of Snowmobile Clubs of Quebec for the region (FCMQ). The clubs are diligently working to reopen trails after facing challenging weather conditions, but things are changing rapidly. If the weather holds, the entire region will soon be accessible.”
Multiple Trail Options Await
Traveling to this remarkable region is simple, thanks to five distinct trail options. You can take Trans Quebec 3, which connects through Côte-Nord, or choose trail 23 that meanders through the Laurentides wildlife reserve. Trail 83 links La Malbaie to Val-D’Or, passing through Ferland-et-Boilleau, Saguenay, and Saint-Hedwidge. There’s also trail 93, connecting Chibougamau to Sacré-Cœur via Dolbeau-Mistassini and the Monts-Valins, along with trail 355 from Mauricie to Lac-Bouchette.
“We are easily reachable, allowing enthusiasts to explore around Lac-Saint-Jean, visit the stunning Monts-Valin, and enjoy the snow-rich Chibougamau-Chapais area. Snowmobilers will traverse large rivers feeding into the lake using solid, safe pathways,” he adds.

However, the specialist emphasizes caution: “Current conditions reflect early-season status. It’s vital to exercise caution, stick to marked trails, and steer clear of unmarked lakes and waterways. We cherish our visitors and hope to see them return.”

In partnership with the Sûreté du Québec and provincial authorities, various measures will be implemented to enhance user safety and ensure compliance with regulations. Police officers and 1,200 trail surveillance agents will engage with snowmobilers, promoting safe practices in accordance with current laws.
