Stefan Hedlund was abruptly dismissed as head coach of the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers following a seventh consecutive loss. This decision, made just days after the sports director expressed confidence in the coaching staff, has significant financial repercussions due to Hedlund’s recent contract extension. While he previously led the team to notable successes, his departure raises concerns about the club’s future, especially in attracting young talent amidst ongoing injury challenges and potential coaching instability.
Stefan Hedlund’s Unexpected Departure from Rapperswil-Jona Lakers
On Friday, sports director Janick Steinmann took to Instagram to express his unwavering support for the coaching staff of the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers amidst a challenging stretch of six consecutive losses. “I am still fully convinced by them,” Steinmann asserted, recalling how they successfully navigated a “heavy situation” together last winter.
However, less than two days later, Steinmann’s confidence in head coach Stefan Hedlund seemed to wane dramatically. Following a disappointing seventh straight defeat—a 0:3 setback against the SCL Tigers—Hedlund was let go on Sunday morning.
The Financial Impact of Coaching Changes
This dismissal comes with significant financial implications for the Lakers. Hedlund, aged 49, had renewed his contract in April 2023 with improved terms, extending his commitment until 2026. This extension also coincided with Steinmann’s contract renewal, as both were reportedly sought after by more financially robust competitors.
Under Hedlund’s leadership, the Lakers previously enjoyed considerable success, reaching the National League’s top four for two consecutive seasons. He built a strong performance culture that allowed the team to outwork opponents despite a talent gap. In 2022, he earned the unofficial title of “Coach of the Year.” Nevertheless, with Hedlund’s exit, it is expected that he will quickly find a new opportunity, possibly even with EV Zug, where he previously worked and which is rumored to be seeking a new coach.
While Hedlund may have time to focus on his sons’ hockey careers—William with Ambri-Piotta and Lucas currently top-scoring for EHC Winterthur after being loaned from the Lakers—Rapperswil-Jona faces a more precarious future. The team’s previous ability to attract young talent is now under threat, as rival clubs like SCL Tigers and EHC Kloten appear to be gaining the upper hand in signing promising players.
Steinmann’s challenges are compounded by ongoing injury issues and an inability to fill critical gaps during the transfer window. The absence of key defenders has exacerbated the situation, leading to questions about the Lakers’ direction and identity as a club. The interim coaching arrangement with assistants Johan Lundskog and Fabian Gunnarsson may not suffice in the long term, and the organization must tread carefully to maintain the goodwill built over recent years.
