Google Pixel 9a: Price, Specs, Release Date – Everything You Need to Know

The Pixel 9a is set to replace the Pixel 8a in Google’s lineup, aiming to stand apart from its predecessor. Reports suggest it will feature a new flat design, a larger 6.3-inch display, and a slightly lighter build. The device will likely utilize a modified Tensor G4 chipset and run on Android 15, with seven years of software updates. It will maintain a dual-camera setup while dropping the main sensor’s resolution to 48 MP. The battery capacity will increase to 5000 mAh, supporting the same charging speeds. Set for a mid-March 2025 launch, the price is expected to remain at €549.

The Pixel 9a is set to succeed the Pixel 8a in Google’s lineup, presenting a challenge to stand out enough from its predecessor.

It is worth noting that the Pixel 8a was quite similar to the Pixel 8, especially since its price was lowered at launch, leading to a sort of market cannibalization upon the 8a’s release.

Let’s hope the Pixel 9a takes a different path. Here, we summarize what is known or speculated about this upcoming mid-range smartphone slated for 2025.

A Design Inspired by the Pixel 9

Recent renders shared by OnLeaks provide an initial glimpse at the Pixel 9a’s design, which promises to be quite different.

In an effort to unify its aesthetics, Google is moving towards a “brick” design for its lower-tier model. Gone are the rounded edges, replaced by flat sides, a flat display, and a flat back—some might even call it an “Android iPhone.”

The distinguishing feature will be on the back with a unique camera module. Instead of a band, it features a protruding dual camera setup, which differs from what is found on the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro. If accurate, this design should provide a smooth feel without any bumps on the back.

Additionally, the Pixel 9a is expected to be larger than the Pixel 8a.

This is attributed to a bigger display, which measures 6.3 inches as opposed to the 6.1 inches of its predecessor. While it may be less compact, it should offer enhanced visual comfort. The trend in smartphones is indeed moving towards larger screens.

However, despite this increase in size, Google aims to lower the phone’s weight, reducing it by 2 grams to a total of 186 grams.

The Pixel 9’s Display?

The Pixel 9a’s display is set to be larger, likely matching the dimensions of the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro.

It may even utilize the same display technology as the Pixel 9, which features a variable refresh rate ranging from 60 to 120 Hz, similar to the Pixel 8a.

Its resolution, however, will be slightly lower (422 ppi compared to 430 ppi).

What we hope for most from this display is accurate calibration. Historically, Google has delivered solid color accuracy and high brightness on models like the Pixel 8a and Pixel 9.

All they need is to replicate that success.

A Tensor G4, But Not Quite

The Pixel 9a is anticipated to run on a Tensor G4 chip, though it won’t be the same SoC as those found in the Pixel 9 series.

To cut costs, Google is reportedly developing a different version of its chip, as per information from Android Authorities.

The differences lie in the chip packaging, using a less expensive option that could slightly affect performance, albeit remaining superior to the Tensor G3 found in the Pixel 8a.

Additionally, this Tensor G4 will not include the new Samsung Exynos 5400 modem, sticking instead with the Exynos 5300 used in the Tensor G3.

This means it will lack features like Satellite SOS and support for 5G 3GPP Rel. 17, along with heat optimization that typically improves battery life.

The modified Tensor G4 in the Pixel 9a will be paired with 8 GB of RAM and storage options of either 128 GB or 256 GB.

Launching with Android 15

There is limited information regarding the software side of the Pixel 9a. It is expected to be launched with Android 15, which has just begun rolling out to Google Pixel devices.

Nevertheless, there are whispers that it may not remain on this version for long. Google is rumored to have adjusted its schedule, with Android 16 potentially launching before the end of the first semester of 2025.

The device will also receive 7 years of software and security updates from Google.

AI features will be included, incorporating all those from the Pixel 8a, as well as likely some from the Pixel 9, such as the “Add Me” function.
