The Montreal Alouettes ended their regular season with a narrow 28-27 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Despite losing three of their last four games, the Alouettes achieved a strong overall record of 12-5-1, their best since 2009. Head coach Jason Maas praised the team’s performance, particularly quarterback Cody Fajardo, who showed resilience. The Alouettes will host the Eastern final on November 9, awaiting their opponent from the Argonauts vs. Ottawa matchup.
The Alouettes may not be entering the playoffs on a high note, but they delivered a commendable performance in their final regular-season game on Saturday at Percival-Molson Stadium.
Ending the season with a narrow 28-27 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Montreal team wrapped up the regular season having won only one of their last four matches. The Blue Bombers secured victory with a last-second 51-yard field goal from Sergio Castillo, capitalizing on a fortunate sequence of events that allowed them the opportunity to score.
“I’ve never witnessed anything like this,” Alouettes head coach Jason Maas commented after the match.
“Of course, winning is the goal, but the way we played and responded was truly impressive,” he added with a positive tone.
Despite the unfortunate outcome, the Alouettes finished the regular season with a strong overall record of 12-5-1, marking their best performance since the 2009 season (15-3). Coach Maas’s team also claimed victory in six out of nine home games.
Looking Ahead to the Eastern Final!
On Saturday, November 9, the Alouettes will host the Eastern final. With a bye to the first elimination round, they await the result of the elimination match between the Argonauts and the Ottawa Rouge et Noir, which will determine their opponent.
Though the game ended in defeat, quarterback Cody Fajardo made notable contributions, particularly during a strong offensive display in the second quarter that resulted in the game’s first touchdown. Fajardo connected on a 26-yard pass to receiver Kaion Julien-Grant and quickly followed that with a short throw to Charleston Rambo in the end zone.
“I appreciated seeing Cody fight through the early setbacks; he remained focused,” Maas remarked. “He completed his passes well, identified his receivers, and made smart decisions to protect the ball.”
Strong Performance from the Offensive Line
Davis Alexander took his turn as quarterback for the Alouettes during the last minutes of the third quarter, even scoring a touchdown with a one-yard run early in the final quarter. Throughout the game, the Alouettes’ offensive linemen showcased their physicality, impressing both Maas and Fajardo.
“Winnipeg has a formidable defensive line, especially with Willie Jefferson, who is a future Hall of Famer, yet our offensive line stood their ground,” Fajardo stated. “Their performance was outstanding, possibly their best of the year.”
