In middle and high schools in France, a minute of silence was observed in memory of Samuel Paty and Dominique Bernard.

Teachers and students in France paid tribute to Samuel Paty (murdered in 2020 by a student in Yvelines) and Dominique Bernard (killed in 2023 by a former student in Pas-de-Calais). “We must do it not only every year but above all we must educate these young people in secularism. It is not so obvious. I am part of this generation who grew up in working-class neighborhoods. I come from a family of faith Muslim and the expression of religion is really in a very private setting.explains Sabrina Agresti-Roubache, former Secretary of State for the City and Citizenship.

Samuel Paty, aged 47, was stabbed then beheaded by Abdoullakh Anzorov, a Russian refugee of Chechen origin, on October 16, 2020 near his college. Dominique Bernard, 57, was stabbed to death by Mohammed Mogouchkov, a former student registered for Islamist radicalization, in front of his establishment. “Now we see clearly that social networks are a weapon of mass destruction of the minds of our youth”adds the former Secretary of State.
