October 13 marks the first anniversary of the disappearance of Dominique Bernard. He was 57 years old, he was passionate about his job. A year ago, he was murdered by a radicalized former student. Today, thousands of people gathered to pay tribute to him in the presence of several ministers.

The sirens of Arras (Pas-de-Calais) rang out on the Place des Héros on Sunday October 13. It’s 11 a.m., the exact time Dominique Bernard, 57, was murdered a year ago. The ceremony brought together an emotional crowd of more than 2,000 people, anonymous people, colleagues, but also high school students who witnessed the attack. According to the family’s wishes, the ceremony was sober, focused on the arts.

On October 13, 2023, at the entrance to his high school, Dominique Bernard was the first to cross paths with a terrorist, a radicalized former student who also injured three people in the courtyard. Before his attack, he had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group. Indicted and imprisoned, he claims to have deliberately targeted the literature professor because this subject represents what he hates, the Republic and democracy.

The humanism and culture of Dominique Bernard were praised by the crowd. At the end of the ceremony, hundreds of Arrage residents placed white roses on a commemorative plaque in tribute to all the victims of terrorism.
