In Senegal, in the village of Bargny near Dakar, the sea gains ground on the coast every year.
The sea is eating away at the land and is dangerously approaching homes in Bargny. On the Senegalese coast, in the town of Bargny near Dakar, the houses of the inhabitants see the sea getting closer year after year. “Every year, the sea advances by 2 meters” deplores Médoune Ndoye, a resident of Bargny. In 40 years, the sea has devoured 60 meters of coastline. At this rate, the city will not last long.
Faced with this rise in sea level, some are building dams with stones found nearby and cement. A ridiculous construction to try to slow down the rising waters. “We will do it little by little with the means at hand.” indicates Ibrahima Diouf, a resident of Bargny. Those who stayed are witnesses to the climate change that Senegal is experiencing. Each year, the country loses on average between one and two meters of coastline.
