The administrative court of Nice (Alpes-Maritimes) suspended on Friday October 11 a municipal decree signed by the mayor of Mandelieu-la-Napoule banning Palestinian flags in his town, reports France Bleu Azur.

This municipal decree was signed by the Republican mayor of the city, Sébastien Leroy at the beginning of the week. The mayor wanted to ban flags, particularly the Palestinian flag, “out of respect for the memory of the victims” of “despicable massacre” from October 7. The Palestinian flag was thus banned in the commune between October 7 and 13.

Seized in summary proceedings by the Human Rights League (LDH) of Nice, which denounced a decision “demagogic” aimed at “brush the grain of a certain electorate”the administrative court therefore suspended this order on Friday.

In a press release published following this court decision, the mayor of Mandelieu-La Napoule, Sébastien Leroy, said “take note” of the decision. “This decision reveals, once again, the disconnect between legalism and reality”he writes, pointing “a particularly tense national context and extreme geopolitical instability”. The municipality is symbolically considering appealing.
