“Dankoroba”, Djely Tapa | Duty

From his first album, Barokan, published five years ago and produced by Afrotronix, the Montreal singer-songwriter of Malian origin has always been keen to inject a modern breath into the griot tradition that she defends. Today it combines this modernity with remarkable sophistication on Dankorobaits twelve songs benefiting from the touch of director Jean Massicotte, architect of recent albums by Monica Freire and Ramon Chicharron. These songs breathe with their subtly electronic orchestrations with perfectly calibrated percussion, which allow the frank voice of Djely Tapa to express this sense of duty to find a better future for the people of Africa. Some songs seem more inviting to dance — Magossarathe committed one drop reggae rhythm of Ndothe almost house cadence of Kègnèkègnè — in the middle of an album inviting more reflection, for example on the delicately bluesy Malianduet with Vieux Farka Touré. A success, this album, which will be launched at the National on October 19.
