The highly anticipated film adaptation of *Wicked*, directed by Jon M. Chu, is set to debut in theaters on December 4, 2024, with a sequel scheduled for November 26, 2025. The story, a prequel to *The Wizard of Oz*, explores the life of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and her complicated relationships at Shiz University. Starring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the adaptation promises a faithful representation of the beloved musical.
Discussions about a film adaptation of Wicked began way back in 2004, shortly after the musical debuted. Fans have been eagerly waiting, especially since the project was brought back to life in 2010.
Good news is on the horizon: the first visuals were revealed during the Super Bowl, and the release date appears to be set in stone, provided nothing unexpected occurs. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming film directed by Jon M. Chu.
Release Date: When Is Wicked Coming Out?
The return to the enchanting Land of Oz is slated for December 4, 2024. It will hit theaters, and as you might have guessed, its title is Wicked Part 1, because this adaptation is divided into two parts, with the second installment being released on November 26, 2025. That could make for an exciting holiday gift!
The Story: What Will Wicked Be About?
Think you’re familiar with the story? Think again! Wicked serves as both a prequel and a unique retelling of The Wizard of Oz, unfolding before and during the events of L. Frank Baum’s classic (the inspiration for the iconic 1939 film). This time, the narrative centers around Elphaba, the Witch of the West, typically regarded as the villain.
Elphaba, born with green skin, faces discrimination from the start. Her experience continues at Shiz University, especially with her sister Nessarose, who is loved more due to her disability.
She becomes roommates with Galinda, who later becomes the Good Witch of the South. Initially portrayed as an adversary, their relationship evolves as Elphaba develops her magical abilities under the watchful eye of Madame Morrible, the university’s headmistress.
This is just a brief glimpse into the plot, which will culminate in crucial encounters with the Wizard of Oz, forming the dramatic center of the story.
Why Two Films?
“There’s so much to explore,” explains Marc Platt, the film’s producer. This is certainly true, considering the musical runs for 2 hours and 45 minutes, including intermissions. “We didn’t want a four-hour cut and end up having to remove songs. We aim to please the fans of the musical.” Fans can look forward to a runtime of about 2 hours and 40 minutes for the first part.
This approach maintains fidelity to the source material while incorporating cinematic elements, and the division mirrors the musical’s two acts: the first serving as a prelude to The Wizard of Oz, while the second unfolds concurrently.
Assuming they adhere to this structure, the first film might conclude with ‘Defying Gravity’, one of the most famous numbers, which has been briefly showcased in the Super Bowl teaser.
Notably, Wicked is completely unrelated to Sam Raimi’s 2013 prequel, The Fantastic World of Oz, which offered its own interpretation of the witches’ narrative.
Casting: Who’s in Wicked?
Anticipation is high for this adaptation, prompting the production to pull out all the stops for casting. Pop sensation Ariana Grande will portray G(a)linda, while Cynthia Erivo takes on the role of Elphaba.
Erivo, who gained fame in Steve McQueen’s Widows, has showcased her musical talent in productions like Sister Act and The Color Purple, the latter of which earned her a Tony Award in 2016.
Joining them are Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, showcasing brilliant casting choices. Jonathan Bailey, known for his performances in Broadchurch and Bridgerton, will play Fiyero, a character who creates tension between key female figures in the story. Fans of The Greatest Showman will also be thrilled to see Kaela Settle appear in the film.
This illustrious lineup will be expertly guided by director and choreographer Jon M. Chu, who is recognized for his work on Sexy Dance 3.
