UN investigators, citing “crimes against humanity”accused Israel on Thursday October 10 of deliberately targeting health facilities in the Gaza Strip, while torturing and killing medical personnel. “Israel is implementing a concerted policy of destroying Gaza’s health system as part of its broader offensive on Gaza,” the United Nations International Independent Commission of Inquiry said in a statement.
The country “commits war crimes and the crime against humanity of extermination with incessant and deliberate attacks on medical personnel and facilities”added the commission. The report also highlighted mistreatment of Palestinian detainees in Israel and hostages held in Gaza, accusing both Israel and Palestinian armed groups of “torture” and sexual violence.
Composed of three members, formed by the Human Rights Council in May 2021 to investigate suspected violations of international law in Israel and the Palestinian territories, this commission published its second report since the Hamas attack, on October 7, 2023. “Israel must immediately stop its wanton and unprecedented destruction of the health system in Gaza”wrote the president of the commission, Navi Pillay, in a press release. By acting in this way, “Israel is attacking the very right to health, with long-term consequences for the civilian population,” she adds.
Israel reacted and accused the commission of “systematic discrimination” against him. She rejected outright the conclusions of the June report, which accused her of committing crimes against humanity, including that of“extermination” in Gaza.
