“The building was safe”! | Duty

This was the declaration of the division head of the Montreal Fire Safety Service the day after a new tragedy in Old Montreal. This valiant official claims that the owner of 400 rue Notre-Dame Est had rectified the non-compliances that had been reported to him. We would like to know what kind of inspection was carried out rather than blindly trusting the word of a bureaucrat. In any case, the building, with its windowless rooms and other anomalies that clients have posted on the Internet, was really not in a state that the City should have tolerated. Is there a pilot on the plane? If so, it is high time he or she puts his or her fist on the table.

This bureaucratic complacency reminds me of the misadventure of Mamadi Camara, arrested by mistake in Parc-Extension in January 2021, then exonerated (by incredible luck) some time later thanks to a surveillance video. The director of the SPVM then affirmed without laughing that everything had been done according to the rules of the art! Well, if these are the rules of the art (or the standards of a public building), perhaps they should be revisited.
