He was part of a reduced list of candidates with Jules Koundé and Mike Maignan, and it was ultimately Aurélien Tchouaméni who was chosen by Didier Deschamps, announced the French Football Federation, Wednesday October 9, to wear the captain’s armband of the Blues against Israel, in Budapest (Hungary). The Madrilenian, 24 years old and 36 caps on the clock, replaces Kylian Mbappé, who is absent, while the vice-captain, Antoine Griezmann, has retired from international duty.
To choose his captain, Didier Deschamps declared at a press conference that he was committed to the “the ability that some people may have to have this responsibility at the moment, without it changing their behavior or their performance”. Aurélien Tchouaméni was therefore judged the most suitable for this, and the most unifying by the coach.
