Old Montreal fire: search for victims is over

Searches carried out for four days in the building targeted by an arson in Old Montreal have not found any other bodies, authorities said Tuesday afternoon.

“After several days of research and in-depth verifications, the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) is now able to confirm that there are no additional victims,” the Montreal police force said in a statement. a press release.

“The SPVM has completed the examination of the crime scene and released the site. The premises were then handed over to the owner,” the police also indicated.

A total of 25 people were inside the heritage building on rue Notre-Dame Est, near rue Bonsecours, when the fire was lit by a criminal hand last Friday night.

Two people lost their lives, a 43-year-old mother and her daughter aged only 7, two tourists from France. The bodies of Léonor Geraudie and little Vérane Reynaud-Geraudie were recovered from the rubble the day after the fire.

The 23 other occupants of the inn were able to be found. Two of them were injured during the events, including one who is still hospitalized.

No suspect has yet been arrested for the crime, which could be part of a context of extortion from downtown restaurant owners.
