The region wants to introduce this tax from 2027 to reduce truck traffic on the roads.

A procession of slow-moving trucks, the A35 blocked by Alsatian road hauliers determined to make themselves heard: this motorway is the one on which the European community of Alsace wants to introduce a tax on heavy goods vehicles, with a cost envisaged 15 cents per kilometer. This is unimaginable for the professionals met at the start of the operation on Monday October 7.

In an already bad economic situation for the sector, the survival of certain companies would be threatened, according to representatives of the sector. This heavy goods vehicle tax, however, would be the only solution to combat exponential transit traffic, according to the government. There will be up to 10,000 trucks per day on the A35, many of which only pass through Alsace to avoid the German ecotax.

Exempt, compensate… Not enough to reassure the transporters of the Alsatian economic world. The tax is far from unanimous, while the project should be submitted to a vote by departmental councilors.
