Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 35 counties on the evening of Saturday October 5 in the face of the threat of Tropical Storm Milton, a week after Hurricane Helene. “We will (…) prepare for effective search and rescue operations, the restoration of electricity and the clearing of roads”wrote on the X network the Republican governor of this state in the southeast of the United States.
Tropical Storm Milton, which is currently moving through the western Gulf of Mexico, “expected to strengthen into a major hurricane heading towards Florida mid-next week”predicts the national weather agency NWS, in a message published on “potentially life-threatening consequences for parts of the west coast of Florida on Tuesday or Wednesday”.
Milton could, according to its trajectory anticipated by the NHC, spare the American interior, such as the mountains of North Carolina where Hurricane Helen caused serious damage, notably triggering floods. Hurricane Helene killed at least 220 people in the southeast of the United States, including 14 in Florida, according to an AFP count based on figures communicated by the authorities.
