Russia | Orca family rescued after stranding in Kamchatka

(Moscow, Russia) A family of orcas stranded since Wednesday on a shoal in the Sea of Okhotsk, near the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East, managed to find freedom thanks to help rescuers, authorities said Friday.

“The orcas have gone offshore. (…) The orcas are saved,” the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said on its Telegram channel.

According to him, rescuers managed to move the orcas, two adults and two babies, to a place where the sea was deeper on Friday, allowing them to return to sea.

Around thirty people took part in the rescue operation to free these mammals stuck in a bay in the Sea of Okhotsk. For two days, rescuers and volunteers doused the orcas with water to prevent their skin from drying out.
