A major fire broke out during the night from Thursday to Friday in a building in Old Montreal. The building is owned by Émile Benamor, who also owns the building destroyed by a fatal arson last year in the same area.
According to authorities, the fire broke out around 2:40 a.m. in a three-story building located at the intersection of Notre-Dame and Bonsecours streets. The Montreal Fire Department activated a general alarm to combat the blaze.
One person was taken to hospital with burns. His precise state of health is currently unknown. Another was bothered by the smoke.
Several streets are blocked by the City of Montreal Police Department in the area near city hall. Power outages are also possible in the surrounding area.
The City of Montreal’s property assessment roll indicates that the building, built in 1923, is owned by Émile Benamor. The latter is also the owner of the building located on Place d’Youville razed by an arson that claimed the lives of seven people on March 16, 2023.
Six months later, Mr. Benamor sued the City for 7.5 million, alleging several faults in fire prevention. The Superior Court ultimately ruled in favor of the City.
