Flames sign defenseman Tyson Barrie to one-year contract

(Calgary) The Calgary Flames agreed to a one-year, US$1.25 million contract with defenseman Tyson Barrie on Thursday.


The 33-year-old guard from Victoria, British Columbia, was invited to the Flames’ training camp via a professional tryout contract.

The veteran of more than 800 games in the National Hockey League will begin his 14the season within the Bettman circuit. He totaled 505 points, including 109 goals, which places him 11e rank among active defenders for the 2024-25 season.

Barrie also played for the Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers and Nashville Predators during his career.

Barrie and Flames captain Mikael Backlund played together with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Junior Hockey League (WHL) in 2008-09. Ryan Huska, the head coach of the Flames, led the Rockets to the WHL title that year.

The Flames will conclude their preseason schedule against the Winnipeg Jets on Friday, before opening the season on October 9 against the Canucks in Vancouver.
