A clarification. In the show “L’Événement” on France 2, Thursday October 3, Michel Barnier confirmed that he was indeed “favorable to return to work” on the end of life bill “where it was interrupted” at the time of the dissolution in early June, which occurred while it was under review. Tuesday, during his general policy speech to the National Assembly, the new head of government simply said he wanted to resume “the dialogue at the beginning of next year”.
With the aim of “save time”it is indeed the project as it was examined and amended that Michel Barnier wishes to resume. “We have to do things seriously, with seriousness. Perhaps also by listening to the caregivers and those accompanying them”he pleaded.
The Prime Minister recalled that he was, moreover, “personally agree” with the initial version of the text, which opens a “assisted dying” below “strict conditions”. He said he appreciated “the very in-depth debate in Parliament” on this question “which touches the conscience”.
As it currently stands, the bill examined at first reading reserved assistance in dying for people over 18, French or residing in France. They must have suffered from “serious and incurable condition, which is life-threatening, in advanced or terminal phase”the latter causing refractory or unbearable physical or psychological suffering.
Those who wished to benefit from it must also be able to express their wishes in a free and informed manner, the deputies having ruled out the possibility of including the use of assisted dying in advance directives. They had also removed the possibility given to a third party to administer the lethal substance.
