Bruno Retailleau wants to increase the retention period for migrants under OQTF in administrative detention centers. The deadline would go from 90 days to 180 or even 210 days. Explanations.
On immigration and insecurity, the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, proposed to the deputies to extend the duration in administrative detention centers (CRA) for certain migrants in an irregular situation. “We go up to 210 days for terrorists. Why wouldn’t we do 210 days for sex crimes?”he asked. To achieve this, a law will be necessary. The minister also intends to build new places in these CRAs, to increase from 2,000 to 3,000 by 2027.
For the moment, however, their funding has not been secured, and the police unions are not convinced by the extension of the duration of detention. In neighboring countries, the maximum periods in detention centers are longer: 12 months in Germany, and up to 18 in Italy. In the UK, there is no maximum time limit.
Bruno Retailleau is betting that with more time, countries of origin will grant more consular passes, necessary for expulsions. “From the moment we don’t get a pass at the start of the retention, we get very few at the end of the retention“, however, notes Serge Slama, professor of public law at Grenoble-Alpes University.
