The Minister of the Interior requests a “reinforcement [des] vigilance measures” In France “following events in the Middle East”wrote Bruno Retailleau in a telegram on Tuesday to the prefects that Franceinfo was able to consult on Thursday October 3. “All police forces, gendarmerie and soldiers of Operation Sentinel must be mobilized by you,” asks the minister to the prefects.
The Minister of the Interior “asks to ensure further strengthening of the security of offices and sites of interest of the community during this month of Tishrei [nouvel an juif]including in particular the holidays of Rosh Hashanah” which take place Thursday and Friday. Bruno Retailleau also asks that this reinforced vigilance apply during the feast of “Yom Kippur on October 12, Sukkot from October 18 to 24 and Simchat on October 25”. Bruno Retailleau also insists on “the commemoration of the attack of October 7, 2023 in Israel”.
More concretely, “entries and exits from offices must be subject to a visible presence on the part of the forces placed under your authority”. The minister asks “pay particular attention to calls for gatherings in connection with current events, taking the measures that you deem necessary to prevent disturbances to public order”. And to conclude, “It is up to you to approach the judicial authority so that it is associated with the prevention of facts and, if necessary, the prosecution of the authors of slogans or acts threatening the Jewish community in particular.”
In another note -a “memento”– which franceinfo was also able to consult, the Ministry of the Interior reminds the prefects of the procedure to follow in the event of an apology for terrorism or an appeal to hatred, feared in the run-up to demonstrations paying tribute to the victims of October 7, 2023 in Israel. This “memento” recalls that Hamas is a terrorist organization and that waving its flag, spreading its slogans and comparing Hamas to a “national or legitimate resistance”constitute acts of apology for terrorism. Finally, the Ministry of the Interior draws the attention of the prefects to the calls for intifada in France, for violence due to support “alleged” from France to Israel, to violence against Israelis, or even people of Muslim faith.
