Paul Watson remains in prison. The detention in Greenland of the environmental activist and defender of whales, arrested at the end of July in this territory dependent on Denmark, was extended on Wednesday October 2 by a local court. And this, until October 23, “in order to ensure his presence in the context of the extradition decision” of the Danish government, in response to Japan’s request, police said. The 73-year-old American-Canadian activist appealed.

The founder of the NGO Sea Shepherd was arrested on July 21 in Greenland, on the basis of an international arrest warrant issued by Japan in 2012 for “conspiracy to board”. He has since been held in pre-trial detention in the town of Nuuk. Tokyo accuses it of preventing the activity of its whalers in Antarctica.

Since his arrest, the activist has been behind bars while waiting for the Danish courts to rule on the request for his extradition to Japan, where he risks fifteen years of imprisonment.
